I rediscovered the book pictured above on Max's bookshelf the other day. It was the book that inspired all future nature calendars after it was printed in 1962. I found it interesting when I first browsed through it back in the 80's, but photography was never really my thing as much as it was for Max. Now I realize how much it has influenced the way I see the natural world. So how did Eliot Porter come to see what he saw? The Powerpoint presentation, which pops up when you click on the book image above, compares Porter's images with those of abstract expressionists who were painting a new way of seeing while Porter shot the photos for his first book In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World.
